Occupational Associate in Specialized Technology

Visiting a health care practitioner can be stressful. Patients are often nervous or anxious about potential illnesses or health problems. Medical assistants are trained to help put patients at ease and assist the physician or other health care practitioner with routine medical office procedures. Career training in medical assisting at CHI Institute can help you get started on a health care career with a promising future.

 Administrative Procedures

In the medical assisting program at CHI Institute, your training could help prepare you for a variety of administrative tasks to keep the medical office running smoothly. Those tasks may include scheduling appointments, making travel and seminar arrangements, coding and processing insurance claims, medical transcription, word processing and the use of other computer applications, and basic bookkeeping and accounting.

 Clinical Procedures

Your medical assisting training can also help prepare you to assist with clinical procedures, which vary according to state law. In Pennsylvania, you may be responsible for administering injections and drawing blood; taking vital signs; and performing first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and electrocardiography. You will also receive instruction on OSHA regulations with emphasis on biohazardous waste containment and state regulations regarding overall safety in the workplace.

Prior to graduation, you will be required to complete an externship to gain real-world job experience as a medical assistant in a health care environment, such as a doctor's office, hospital, or other allied health facility.

 Career Opportunities

When you earn an occupational associate's degree in medical assisting from CHI Institute, you could have the credentials required to pursue entry-level medical assisting jobs in hospitals, urgent care centers, surgical centers, physicians' offices, health maintenance organizations, and other allied health care facilities.

Prepare for Certification Exams

Certification is a process that shows that you have met established industry standards set by professional boards or government agencies. The medical assisting program at CHI Institute can help you prepare for the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) exam sponsored by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).*
