Automated machines are increasingly being used to dispense prescription medications. However, despite automation efforts, the process still requires trained pharmacy technicians to oversee the machines, stock the bins, and label the containers. In addition, many routine tasks previously performed by pharmacists are now being delegated to pharmacy technicians. As a result, the demand for employees with specialized pharmacy technician training from an accredited institution is expected to continue in the years to come.* Contact CHI Institute for more information about how you can get started in this promising career field.
As a pharmacy technician, you will work directly under the supervision of a registered pharmacist, assisting in a variety of administrative and prescription processing duties, which may vary with the laws of the state in which you are employed. You may be required to:

At CHI Institute, your pharmacy technician courses will emphasize prescription order processing, including receiving and checking drug orders, storage of drugs, maintaining inventory control, stocking procedures, and handling outdated items. You will be required to learn trade and generic names of medication and how drugs affect the various systems of the body. Through hands-on lab training, you can develop competency in hospital pharmacy procedures, including preparing sterile intravenous solutions using proper techniques. You will also have the opportunity to master skills in first-aid, CPR, and computer software applications, giving you the well-rounded education you need to succeed in the workplace.
Prior to graduation, you will be required to complete an externship at a retail or hospital pharmacy in the community to apply the skills you learn in school in an actual real-world work environment.
